Why is Nutrition so important?

Nutrition: the process by which living creatures obtain energy from food and drink, for the purpose of body growth, maintenance and health.

Nutrition is vital for our body to function properly, as natural food and water provides us with the building blocks of life. A nutritionally balanced diet should provide enough nutrients, such as proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals to support all of the body’s systems, helping to promote health and prevent illness.

However, whilst a balanced diet supports optimal health, until recently, the extent of its role in preventing disease and chronic illness was less understood. Poor nutritional intake is believed to be a significant factor in many of today’s illnesses.

Furthermore, many of us do not obtain the level of nutrients needed for optimal health. This is often the result of our modern lifestyles, poor food choices, low nutrient-value convenience foods and the industrialisation of agriculture techniques.
