Flat Peaches (Saturn Peaches)

These unusually shaped peaches have similar nutrition profiles to regular, but for sweetness, looks and convenience they are great.


TRY ME I’M GOOD IN

A flat peach and vanilla clafoutis, lightly roasted in a summer salad, or blended, and added to sparkling water, ice and mint for refreshing summer beverage, or just eaten on my own.


FACTS

· The flat peach originated in China, where it is known as pántáo (coiled peach).

· Their skin is yellow / white and red, and they are less fuzzy than many other peaches.

· The inside of the flat peach is normally white in appearance, but also a golden yellow.

· They are said to be more complex-tasting and flavourful than regular, with undertones of almond.

· They are harvested in late spring through the end of summer.

· They are known by many other names, including donut peach, saucer peach, UFO peach, Chinese flat peach, hat peach, squashed peach, bagel peach or pita peach.

· Genus: Prunus Species: Prunus persica var. platycarpa Family: Persica


WHY ARE THEY SO GOOD?

Vitamin C 6.6mg/100g (11% RNI)

· It is an antioxidant required for many metabolic functions in the human body.

· It also aids in immunity and in healing wounds and can repair tissues (like collagen).

· Helps in the absorption of iron and alongside other nutrients, such as zinc, vitamin E and lutein can prevent age related macular degeneration.


Fibre 1.5g/100g (6% RNI)

· Peaches contain soluble and non-soluble fibre, which functions as a good bulk laxative.

· Fibre also helps to maintain the health of our gastrointestinal system and to help our microbiome to flourish.

· Additionally, it may bind to cancer-causing toxins and chemicals in the colon, protecting its mucous membrane from contact with these compounds.

· It maintains health of certain tissues like those in the retina.

· It also helps in growth and keeps the skin healthy and promotes regular development of skeletal tissue and teeth.

· It also required for maintaining healthy mucosa and it has been found to protect from lung and oral cavity cancers.

· It helps regulate fluid balance in the kidney, muscle contractions and nerve signals.

· It is Important for the nervous system, as nerve impulses are generated by sodium ions moving into cells and potassium ions moving out of cells.
